We always talk about ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤ, but I think we understand it a little differently than maybe is helpful for us.

Aside

[In the ultimate sense, of course, this means loving devotion. But in the beginning, we don’t know how to love. We can’t even imagine the unconditional love that makes up loving devotion because we’ve never known anything like it in the illusion.]

In the journey, it might be more helpful to take this meaning for ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤ: ਭਾਵ ਭਗਤੀ, or emotional devotion.

We have a bunch of emotions. As David Hawkins makes clear in the ninth book of his series, Letting Go, a feeling captures the root of thousands of thoughts at once. Working with a focus on feeling gets us immediately to the root cause of things; to the center of every issue.

Thus, when working on spirituality, it’s important to work on the feeling, rather than the thoughts. This is why Guru Nanak’s ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤ is so powerful and takes us right to the end; it’s a simpler, more direct path. And it leads to the absolute ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤ, loving devotion.

[So, the practice is to focus on the feeling of doing things when taking any action: breathing, reading, music, etc. The feelings will tell you if you’re doing it right or doing it “wrong.”]
