Why is ਦੁਖੁਦਾਰੂ?

ਦੁਖੁਦਾਰੂਸੁਖੁਰੋਗੁਭਇਆਜਾਸੁਖੁਤਾਮਿਨਹੋਈ॥

Because in ਸੁਖੁ, we are content with our miscreations, to use the language of the Course. But in dukh, it all starts to fall apart; something comes up which does not equate. It is the point at which we are reminded that the ego does not have all the answers and that something is wrong: something has come up that is unacceptable in our perception.

Dukh is the doorway to ultimate completeness, because it is precisely the point where our defenses are weakest. This is why Satguru ji also tells us how easy Kaljug is:
ਅਬਕਲੂਆਇਓਰੇ॥
ਇਕੁਨਾਮੁਬੋਵਹੁਬੋਵਹੁ॥
ਅਨਰੂਤਿਨਾਹੀਨਾਹੀ॥
ਮਤੁਭਰਮਿਭੂਲਹੁਭੂਲਹੁ॥

So, maybe, when we’re feeling down (or that things are meaningless) etc., that is the point of realization: truly, the world we have created is meaningless!
ਜਗਰਚਨਾਸਭਝੂਠਹੈਜਾਨਿਲੇਹੁਰੇਮੀਤ॥ ਕਹਿਨਾਨਕਥਿਰੁਨਾਰਹੈਜਿਉਬਾਲੂਕੀਭੀਤਿ॥੪੯॥

That is the point at which we turn to that which is higher.

Taking all the above together…

this is the importance of giving ਸੀਸ during the Amrit Sanchar. This is symbolic of the daily practice to actualize.

We realize that what we have created is painful and without meaning. We have seen it so:

ਉਸਤਤਿਨਿੰਦਾਨਾਨਕਜੀਮੈਹਭਵਞਾਈਛੋੜਿਆਹਭੁਕਿਝੁਤਿਆਗੀ॥
ਹਭੇਸਾਕਕੂੜਾਵੇਡਿਠੇਤਉਪਲੈਤੈਡੈਲਾਗੀ॥੧॥

We are willing to do anything to go beyond it (in the beginning, our motivation tends to be simply escape from pain). We then start to take Gurbani and the sadhus, sants, and mystics on faith; we have no experience yet. Because we are still so raw, unformed, we stumble and fall and pick ourselves back up. In the back of the mind, we’re still trying to create our own world, albiet a better one. We’re (the small self) trying to contain the totality of the Universe and God. This is not possible.

There comes the point of realization of the mistake. And then you give yourself completely to the Guru (ਤਨੁਮਨੁਧਨੁ) which is symbolized by the head. And then the creation of Amrit begins by the five beloved ones in the presence of the Guru.

Are there any shortcuts? Ultimately, everyone has to come to the realization themselves. No one can prepackage that realization for you or give you knowledge. It comes from within. To be sure, they can give you guideposts and tips, but even they only make true sense in retrospect. You can only see when you have the eyes to see, when you have seen for yourself.

The only shortcut is the Guru: ੴਸਤਿਗੁਰਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ॥ (bhagat, leave the reins in His hands)

You will make mistakes, and it will take time, because what the Guru has seen is not something we can concieve of when we start. We have no model to even imagine with. You just have to start walking and make your mistakes.

The more you act on the teaching of the Guru, the more deeply you get it (all practices are meant to collapse). He teaches you Himself. No one otherwise has the power to hold your hand.

So start! Start now. Sachkhand is at hand.

Some Tips/Attitudes

Patience

Now you must learn that only infinite patience produces immediate effects. ²This is the way in which time is exchanged for eternity. ³Infinite patience calls upon infinite love, and by producing results now it renders time unnecessary. ⁴We have repeatedly said that time is a learning device to be abolished when it is no longer useful.

Be patient in your practice; This is why an ਆਸ਼ਿਕ is always in ਇੰਤਿਜਾਰ of the beloved.

I’ve definitely had glipses of this, but I had never really grasped what it meant until now (Sept. 18, 2026).

Aside

[Notes that have come from such glipses include: Once we set down this illusion, we become calm, leave the reins in His hands, mellowing and infusing, the art of waiting, We only ever do a few things. As you can see, I have been circling this concept for a while].

Be a learner

Always remember that you are a Sikh of the Guru; it is the student who makes the greatest leaps (Disappearance of the Universe - Renard, pg. 58).
